Back in England he published two works based on his Amazon trip, Palm Trees of the Amazon and Their Uses and A Narrative of Travels on the Amazon and Rio Negro. With double the data from different parts of the world, the hypothesis seemed even stronger and more believable. He survived and was picked up from a lifeboat, but his collections were lost. In fact, the first public declaration of the Theory of Evolution through Natural Selection came as a joint presentation by Darwin and Wallace at the Linnaean Society of London's annual meeting. On the way back his ship caught fire and sank. Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace independently discovered the mechanism of natural selection for evolutionary change. In 1852 Wallace decided to return to England due to ill health. They set sail for the mouth of the Amazon in 1848, and Wallace spent the next four years collecting specimens and studying evolutionary change. generally referred to as the darwin-wallace theory of natural selection in honor of the ideas both darwin and wallace developed. Wallace and Bates decided to pursue their entomological activities in the Amazon basin of South America. Largely self-taught, he made friends with a young British naturalist, Henry Walter Bates, who introduced Wallace to entomology. While teaching surveying in Leicester, Wallace frequented local libraries and read several major works on natural history and biology. He discovered he enjoyed the outdoor surveying work and became interested in botany, animal life and the biology of his surroundings. As a young man, Wallace apprenticed in a number of trades, including surveying and map-making. Rather, I choose to follow Wallace's path against Darwin's in thinking that natural selection plays a major role in the reproductive isolation that defines species, and I shall actually venture some steps further than Wallace, and will advocate in the following pages that natural selection can act on the very first stages of reproductive.
